Saturday morning. 10:15 am. I'm driving from my house at Oregun to my office at Ojodu when I run I run into heavy traffic around Omole Estate. My car, a Tico, is small and in good shape, so I'm whizzing past the other cars like they don't exist but eventually there's nowhere to go. Sitting there under a sun that I can swear has moved two kilometers nearer earth, I stretch my hand out for my radio dial. Hold-on-wait-a minute what's this? I've never heard this before. The beat is definitely thumping, and the lyrics definitely make sense and there's something vaguely familiar about that voice. Have I heard this song before? Definitely not. So what is it? Yeah, I get it now. This guy is a Nigerian. Def! Def, 'cos in this day of Fushnikens wannabes who've come to 'claim Nigeria's Hip Hop crown' . This Guy's lyrics are crystal clear. Oh no! the song's over and i didn't catch the artiste's name. Well... Fast-forward to three weeks later, I'm just coming into my office, and there's this guy waiting at the reception. "Hi, Mr. P, I'd like to see you". " Do I know you? " I ask as he unfolds his over six foot height. "No, My name is Six foot plus". What an apt name, I mutter to myself. But to him , I say. "okay let's go to my office". While talking to him he tells me he's a graduate of dramatic arts (I warm up to him 'cos that's what I studied), and he's also a rapper. (that's even better, 'cos of my music background). Six Foot Plus is a serious rapper. That song i was listening to that Saturday in my car was titled Millennium Buggin' and it's Six Foot Plus' song. As we talk, we slot the CD into my PC and it plays in the background. The crew Six Foot Plus rolls with is called SWATROOT - Sporadic Words Rhyming On Our Terms(It used to be known as AFTERMATH: Alliance For The Entrenchment of Rap Music Art form Techniques And Hip-Hop-but they had to discontinue this handle when Dr. Dre came out with AFTERMATH Records. He swears they started using that name before Dre i believe him!!!) And his rhymes do have tactics; they're also different so he does things on his own terms. Members of his clique are amongst the undegroundest rappers this side of the equator and this side of the millennium. Solo Dee rides with that crew, as do Mode 9, Baron and his elder bro' Eldee XL (of the Rhyme FM fame). This Benue State born artist has an as yet untitled album coming out soon on PAYBACK TYME RECORDS (owned by Solo Dee). What we definitely know is that songs like Wahalilfe, Medicine Man, That Meaningless Rap song and of course, Millennium Buggin' will be on the album. These re songs that have won him lots of accolades on stage(where he dresses like a voodoo priest), including 2nd prize out of musician from 7 states and the FCT) in the Benson and Hedges Grab-A-Mic zonal contest in Bauchi, which earned him a place in the National finals as well as an electric guitar. He also featured on Zakki Adzee's Wo Egbe E, and was nominated for the AMEN Awards. Not bad for someone who doesn't flaunt his skills in your face. The microphone is where the fight takes place for 6ft Plus. There he knows he'll give you a beat down and you can take that to the bank. |
