MOST CATS DON'T SLEPT ON this 6-foot something lyrical warlord from SWAT ROOT. Some young ones even peed on him. But while other cats be spitting and making no sense. Mode 9 is your pastor preaching and at the same time teaching students of rap and wannabes art. Before joining the team at Hip-Hop World, I'd often wondered what all the hype about Mode 9 was about. Even though I eventually met him in 2000. i still could not fathom the reason behind all the time and ink wasted on him. I know better now. My curiosity was fed when I heard the completed (though unreleased) album, IX Files. Y'all have heard 'I DON DEY COME, IT'S ABOUT TO GET UGLY AND SCHOOLIN' (Featuring label mate Rule Clean ). However, y'a;ll are still ill - prepared for what is about to happen. The 19- track album is the true heads' delight. Whether rapping in English, in pidgin Enlish or chanting, 9 schools acolytes on the art of rapping. He tales you to realms hitherto uncharted by any in Nigeria with his depth and mastery of the use of metaphors, similies and other poetic tools. Like Jadakiss, frontman of the LOX, he 'has the master flow, fast or slow'. Being on paybacktyme Records, the home of Swat Root, also helps keep him on his toes. He cannot afford to rest on his oars what with the likes of such legends as fellow ROOT members as Solo Dee, El Dee XL, Six Foot plus, and label mates like Terry tha Rapman, OD and Ruleclean plus the production wizardry of Da Baron. 9 proves that he can stand on his own toes as most of the production on this album is handled by G - Links and Da Capo (of the God Tha Father Fame), both Abuja based producers. When this album drops, Mode 9 will be placed exactly where he is supposed to be, at the top of the game. Only two things can stop him now; God and welll, God. God don't like ugly. But then this is beautiful. |
